Discovery Data Systems offers a unique combination of services in the product development and electronic engineering arena. There are many different specialties that must be applied to any product development. With many hi-tech developments, there is often a mix of digital hardware, analog hardware, and often firmware to make it all work. Depending on the application, the project may also involve PCB design, parts procurement, contract assembly, packaging, production tooling, even brochure graphics. It is often difficult for any company to receive all of these services from a single source. Often, this kind of development means going out and locating, interviewing, and negotiating with a multitude of sources. Even worse, splitting the development effort between a series of service providers can lead to massive coordination effort on your part.

Discovery Data Systems, inc. can simplify ALL of these problems. If you are currently working on a project in-house and only need support in one area, then DDSi can most likely provide just that service. If you are starting a new project and do not have the internal man-power to support it, or you are developing a product that you do not support internally at all, then DDSi can provide many different resources from a single supplier!

While most of the serices provided by DDSi are provided directly from in-house resources, over the past 20 years, DDSi has also developed a number of alliances with other professional suppliers to further enhance our capabilities.

Most DDSi services are provided directly by Barry Wroobel, president of DDSi. Barry Wroobel is a multi-disciplinary engineer skilled in a variety of areas including: digital and analog hardware design, system and application program development, mechanical design, with experience in machining, molding, and plastic/metal working. Since all of these disciplines are either directly provided by a single individual, or at least coordinated by a single individual, there is virtually NO inter-disciplinary communication problems!

DDSi Objectives:

Provide programming, digital and analog hardware design, problem solving and trouble-shooting, concept design and engineering skills, installation and training for the design and development of new products, product renovation, and engineering support, to clients, on a contract basis, without the traditional overhead or long term commitment of employees.

Service Areas:

Microprocessor/system design: computers, controllers, and process control;
S-100, Multi-bus, Standard Bus, EISA Bus, 65XX series, 68XX series, 80X1, Z-8, Z-80,
Z8S180, 80XX, 80x86, 68000, bit slice;
Power supply design: analog and switch mode, programmable;
Data acquisition/digital signal processing, offline & realtime;
Audio amplifier design;
PCB design, layout, schematic capture;
Software/firmware control and driver programming;

Past projects examples:

Digital speech record/playback message pad -
Voice Power Technology, Sherman Oaks, CA

Developed firmware for battery operated, digital speach recorder & playback home
notepad. Units were mass marketed through Radio Shack. Unit would record
approximately 40 seconds worth of message for kids to leave voice message on.

Mercury analyzer electronics redesign - Cetac Technology, Omaha, NE
M6000 electronics package redesign. Increased stability to reduce warm up time of worlds
lowest detection limit Mercury analyzer from 3 hours to 15 minutes. Produced stabilty for
production unit down to 0.1 part/trillion. Eliminated 75% of hand wiring in each unit,
reduced power supply count from 3 to 1, greatly reduced complexity.

Spectrometer analysis software development - ARL, Valencia, CA
Complete rewrite of popular elemental analysis software package to enhance functionality,
performance, and features.

Microprocessor controlled ICP torch tuning board - ARL, Valencia, CA
Interface of 27Mhz RF generator and stepper motor controlled tuning system. Reliabilty
was increased while reducing costs and simplfied manufacturing.

Computer controlled resistor trim station - JDK Controls, Newbury Park, CA
PC controller for two axis precision potentiometer/resistor trim station. Comlete
automation of trimming functions for production trimming down to 0.1% accuracy.

Strobe head cooling fan switch-mode power supply - Norman Ent. Burbank, CA
Studio strobe head required unique wide input range, non-sinusoidal input wave shape
(powered from dimmer control) design-production cost delivered at under budget.

Miscellaneous other projects:
ICP torch design, Standard Cell hand held Oxygen analyzer, spectrometer data acquisition
electronic design; high resolution video display electronics; hardware communication
interface design, etc.
